A large crater to dump my thoughts

Guilty pleasures

As record labels have long recognized, image matters in the music business (hell, it matters in almost all businesses). Even, or perhaps especially, the music hipsters who don’t like to listen to commercialized “mainstream” music try to find music with an image that they can identify with. I’m not immune to this phenomenon, though I do like to think that I’ll listen to whatever I like, regardless of what the political preference or fashion sense of the artist is. Even if it means having to hide some cd’s when my music hipster friends come to visit (aye, being a hipster isn’t always easy).

Anyway. There’s some eighties (former) hair metal I enjoy, like Aerosmith, Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden and Queensrÿche. Also – and I’m dead serious about this – Bon Jovi. Apparently Bon Jovi isn’t appropriate material if you’re a music hipster, as I’ve heard on several occasions. This was all baffling to me, since I thought they’d made some pretty good songs, with particularly good guitar solos (Dry County is great), and not all that different from their contemporaries that I mentioned earlier.

That is, until I had to stay in the same hotel as the British Bon Jovi fanclub for three nights in a row. I get it now. I still listen to Bon Jovi on occasion, but with my headphones on, feeling slightly guilty.
